The Peepoople Kenya team in Kibera set out to join the rest of the world to mark the Global Handwashing Day. As we currently work with 30 schools and daycares within Kibera providing them with the Hygienic, single use Peepoo toilet, we saw the need to undertake this activity with some of them. This is important to us because hand washing with soap can reduce the incidence of diarrhoea among children.

In each of the school and daycare, the team got to talk with the children discussing the importance of hand washing with soap. The children answered questions on when they should wash their hands and were rewarded with a bar of soap that they could take home and use with their families.

In addition we did hand washing demonstrations following all the hand washing steps and all the children got a chance to wash their hands. We also left soap with the schools so as to continue the hand washing with soap process. Around 1200 children got to wash their hands with our team.

Realizing that most of the children had no access to soap for washing their hands at school was sad, but watching their smiles as they looked at their clean hands warmed our hearts.

Sanitation and the Peepoo use go hand in hand and we will continue to make a difference.
