Global Handwashing Day celebrated in Barguna and Kurigram Districts of Bangladesh

Terre des hommes Foundation, Bangladesh, celebrated the “Global Handwashing Day” held on 15th October within its project areas (Kurigram and Barguna) involving the community peoples and in presence of local authorities. Awareness of the importance of hand washing with soap was promoted. School children have been involved in games, drawing and other activities related to this topic during the celebration.

More than 1300 children from five different schools and about 700 community peoples from Tdh working areas in Kurigram and Barguna Districts of Bangladesh joined in this event, pledging to promote hand washing with soap during the five critical times.

In both Districts, Tdh organized a day long programme, which featured games and educational activities for children, promoted correct handwashing technique and attracted an estimated 2,000 local residents and students was organized by Tdh in assistance with School authorities, teachers, community leaders, Government of Bangladesh health department and local Government. Mostly the children took part in a rally with colorful banner, festoon, cap, etc. with mentioning slogan about critical times of handwashing and its importance.

A painting competition was arranged with the theme of handwashing for the students. The students found very attentive during the competition and they were very happy for being a participant of that competition. Some local games also arranged for the children and they participated actively as well.

In the school compound Tdh staff demonstrated a TIPPY-TAP for handwashing of the children and teachers. In that time, Tdh also discussed how the community people can make a handwashing station at their house by using local available materials.

Another event was handwashing demonstration facilitate by Tdh staff following correct methods with soap and described the five critical times to wash hands. During the demonstration, other students were present and they were excited to see the handwashing methods.

The last event was campaign on handwashing. During this event, in presence of school children, teachers, local elites and local government officials Tdh campaign team described proper handwashing techniques, its importance and benefits through drama and song.

Finally, Tdh organized prize distribution ceremony for the children to participate in the handwashing related events through an open discussion on handwashing. The school teachers and local elites distributed the prize to the children.
