The COVID-19 pandemic provides a stark reminder that one of the most effective ways to stop the spread of a disease is also one of the simplest: hand hygiene. To beat COVID-19 today and ensure better health outcomes beyond the pandemic, hand hygiene must be a priority now and in the future. This year’s Global Handwashing Day theme, Hand Hygiene for All, follows the global initiative launched by WHO and UNICEF which calls for a whole-of-society approach to achieve universal hand hygiene. Through increased political leadership, a strong enabling environment, and a robust supply and demand for hand hygiene facilities and supplies, we can achieve Hand Hygiene for All.
Global Handwashing Day provides an important platform for all leaders to endorse handwashing and bridge current COVID-19 efforts to the long-term prioritization of hand hygiene. The Permanent Mission of Finland to the United Nations and the United Kingdom Permanent Mission to the United Nations, in collaboration with UN-Water, the Global Handwashing Partnership, WHO and UNICEF, are co-convening a high-level virtual event, “Global Handwashing Day – Accelerating Toward Hand Hygiene for All.” The event will be held this Global Handwashing Day (October 15), from 12:00PM – 1:30PM UTC.
The event will drive sustained action for hand hygiene at the global, regional, and national level. Through this event, the organizers call for greater commitment to specific hand hygiene actions, such as developing country roadmaps, as well as prioritizing follow-up meetings with governments and donor institutions to commit to increasing hand hygiene investments.
