Advocating for Universal Hand Hygiene – Our Commitment to the Water Action Agenda

March 22, 2023

World Water Day 2023 is about accelerating change to solve WASH crises. The latest data show that governments must work 4x faster to meet Sustainable Development Goal 6 by 2030. As the WASH sector convenes for a once-in-a-generation conference – the UN Water Conference – we can’t help but realize there is a need for urgent change and progress.

A key output of the UN Water Conference is the Water Action Agenda, designed to deliver rapid, transformative change leading up to 2030. Through this agenda, the Global Handwashing Partnership commits to advocating for universal hand hygiene, serving as a key voice for an often-neglected part of the WASH sector.

With over 40 partners around the world, the partnership aims to elevate the importance of hand hygiene at the global level, partner with governments and other stakeholders to support country-level advocacy and highlight the impact of hand hygiene in sectors outside of water, sanitation and hygiene.

At a global level, our flagship event – Global Handwashing Day – reaches over 2 billion people with handwashing messages, but we know knowledge alone is not enough to ensure universal access and practice of hand hygiene. We strive to continue our efforts to produce more excitement, commitment, and investment toward hand hygiene, working with leaders across the public and private sectors to meet our goal.
