Concern Universal & Carex Soap held the world’s largest and longest celebration of Global Handwashing Day in Nigeria – a country in which 1 in 5 children die of hygiene-related diseases each year. The month-long campaign reached 45,000 children from 210 schools from rural communities, already committed to improving their hygiene, where children were empowered as handwashing promoters. At 10 regional events, schools also completed in our talent competition, ‘CareX Factor’, that gets children thinking creatively about handwashing by performing their own version of our campaign anthem ‘Wash Your Hands O’ recorded by Nigerian music star Sunny Neji. At the final on 15th October, Sunny Neji and the winning schools performed to an audience of 500. The campaign reached millions more Nigerians through jingles and interviews aired on local TV and radio stations and half a million more worldwide through our interactive social media campaign. This campaign complements a five-year initiative that Concern Universal is implementing in Nigeria for the UN’s Global Sanitation Fund that is empowering two million rural people to sustainably improve their sanitation & hygiene practices.
