In coordination with local government representatives, local WASH committees, school teachers, and community representatives, Catholic Relief Services and SAPLING celebrated Global Handwashing Day with a school and community-based WASH campaign to raise awareness about the benefits of handwashing with soap.
Teachers provided hygiene education for students on proper handwashing behavior and community members encourages households to have handwashing stations near their toilets and food preparation areas. SAPLING worked with five secondary schools to disseminate handwashing messages and conduct handwashing with soap demonstrations. 741 students and 41 teachers participated in the program, with 301 girls and 488 boys.
SAPLING also conducted a community-wide awareness session with 11 pre-selected communities to promote proper handwashing practices at the five critical times. Organizers demonstrated proper handwashing with soap using a Tippy Tap. In this session, 374 community people participated.
