The Community Water and Sanitation Agency (CWSA) coordinated activities in 7 regions of Ghana in partnership with WaterAid, USAID, World Vision Ghana, UNICEF, Plan Ghana, Global Communities, Ghana Education Service, and district assemblies. The national program was organised in the Upper West Region. Most of the activities focused on school children, teachers, traditional leaders and queenmothers, food vendors, traders, religious groups, community healthcare workers and water and sanitation management teams. The activities involved house to house sensitisation on handwashing with soap and installation of handwashing devices, community durbars, street promotion, demonstration of construction of tippy taps, distribution of, orientation on handwashing, TV and radio discussions in different local languages, Kids quiz, performances and games on handwashing with soap. The national celebration had 20,000 pupils and 1,400 local based handwashing devices were distributed by school children in rural communities. A letter was issued by the Director General of Ghana Education Services to all public schools in Ghana to promote key handwashing messages to mark the day.
