Global Handwashing Day Two Ethiopian Refugee Camps

IRC celebrated Global Handwashing Day in collaboration with partners, including:  social workers, the Administration for Refugees and Retrunees Affaire (ARRA), Save the Children, a women’s association, the Refugee Central Committee (RCC), and a youth circus club. The sensitization for two refugee camps–Ashura & Sherkole–included information sharing through entertainment. Stakeholders were informed and key message disseminate in a mass way  The subtheme for the event was “handwashing with soap is a ‘do-it-yourself vaccine’ that prevents infections and saves lives.” Many activities were done during the festival like songs, poems, handwashing demonstrations, competitions with volunteers, and health education.

The objective of the celebration was to increase awareness of refugee communities on the important of handwashing, steps to wash hands and critical moments to wash hands in order to prevent hygiene and sanitation related diseases.

Expected output: Increase the number of refugee communities motivated to change handwashing practices before contact food and after contact with feces.

Activities included:

  • Opening speech by an ARRA representative
  • Health education by ARRA
  • Circus drama by youth club in Arabic and English
  • Health education about handwashing by IRC refugee incentive workers
  • Music by pre-school children with a D.J. music mixer
  • Poem in Arabic addressed the key facts and benefits of handwashing
  • Hand washing program for all participants
