UNICEF celebrates Global Handwashing Day 2017 in Palestine

In 2017, UNICEF in the State of Palestine continued to support the Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MoEHE) to strengthen, scale up and mainstream Global Handwashing Day (GHD) components into the MoEHE’s action plan. As for the past years, GHD in the State of Palestine, is taken in a campaign mode, rather than a one-day celebration only.

While the celebration on 15th October was kept as a special celebration day, GHD activities were planned and implemented over a period stretching for several months during the school year. As a result of the 2017 campaign in Palestine, 362,750 students (of whom 275,000 from the West Bank and 87,750 from Gaza) in 1,235 schools (1,100 in the West Bank and 135 in Gaza) participated in hygiene promotion interventions/activities.

In addition, students’ hygiene supplies (including MHM items) and school hygiene kits were procured and distributed in 17 selected schools in 17 directorates in the West Bank to benefit 35,700 students, as part of the joint UNICEF and MoEHE intervention of the broader national GHD Campaign as well as the 3 Star Approach rolled out by the MoEHE in Palestine. The students celebrated GHD through several activities, such as songs, Dabkheh dancing, drawing and competitions among students for best hygiene practices.
