UNICEF celebrates Global Handwashing Day 2017 in Rwanda

In 2017, Global Handwashing Day was celebrated in Rwanda within an integrated ‘Maternal Child Health Week’. At an event in Nyamagabe district, over 2,000 people gathered to hear Her Excellency Diane Gashumba, Minister of Health speak about the importance of handwashing with soap, and watch a rousing performance by the nationally-renowned Urunana comedic drama troupe. Representatives from UNICEF, USAID and Rotary International also spoke about the importance of handwashing with soap to improve maternal and children health, including reduction of stunting. In addition, the Ministry of Health also communicated through multiple radio talk shows to reach more 1 million people with key hygiene and sanitation messages such as handwashing with soap at critical times.
