University of Southampton is launching its Germ Defence handwashing website to coincide with Global Handwashing Day. The website has previously been through a randomised controlled trial of over 20,000 people in the UK. Results demonstrated that people who used the website increased the amount they washed their hands; reduced cold, flu, and stomach bug illnesses; and people were ill for a shorter time period and had fewer illnesses. The University of Southampton is working with health support groups whose members will benefit from added protection against these infectious and are expecting national media coverage.
