On October 15 of every year, Global Handwashing Day (GHD) is dedicated to raising awareness, understanding, and commitment to promote handwashing as an effective and affordable way to prevent diseases and save lives. The importance and cross-cutting benefits of handwashing and we must continue advocating for hand hygiene as a critical, health-improving practice.
Making hand hygiene available and accessible for all people is a multifaceted issue and requires stakeholders at all levels, including individuals and communities at the local level, as well as governments and NGOs at national/international levels. The theme for this year’s GHD is “Unite for Universal Hand Hygiene,” which emphasizes the need for all these stakeholders to work together in harmony to achieve effective hand hygiene for all. Thus, no matter your role, you can celebrate Global Handwashing Day too. Here’s how you can get involved:
Plan an event or campaign. It’s not too late to plan a Global Handwashing Day celebration. Use resources from our “Take Action” tab to plan an in-person or virtual event celebrating GHD. Be sure to submit your Global Handwashing Day plans here.
Share your work on social media. Use our resources to connect with other Global Handwashing Day celebrants and share your commitment to Unite for Universal Hand Hygiene. Visit our social media and community forum pages to share messages and read what others are doing to celebrate. When sharing your work online, be sure to tag us on Twitter (@HandwashingSoap) or Facebook (Global Handwashing Day). Use this year’s hashtags, #GlobalHandwashingDay and #UniteforUniversalHandHygiene, to keep up with the handwashing conversations around the world!
