Global Handwashing Day is celebrated every year on October 15th, and it’s a perfect opportunity to remind ourselves and our communities about the importance of hand hygiene.
Why Are Clean Hands Still Important?
This year’s campaign theme is “Why are clean hands still important?”. As we move past the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the importance of clean hands remains crucial. Handwashing with soap is one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of infectious diseases, including respiratory infections and diarrheal diseases. Whether it’s in hospitals, schools, or in everyday interactions, practicing handwashing with soap still contributes to better health outcomes and a safer world for everyone.
Get involved with Global Handwashing Day
Global Handwashing Day presents an opportunity to create a big splash around handwashing with soap. Here is how you can get involved:
Plan an Event or Campaign: Organize a handwashing event at your local school, community center, or workplace. Use resources from our “Take Action” tab to plan an in-person or virtual celebration. Consider activities like handwashing demonstrations, educational talks, and interactive competitions to engage participants of all ages. You can also collaborate with local health officials or organizations to amplify your impact. Don’t forget to document your event with photos and videos and be sure to submit your Global Handwashing Day event outcomes here. Sharing your success stories can inspire others and help spread the message of the importance of clean hands!
Spread the Word on Social Media: Use your social media platforms to share messages about the importance of handwashing. Visit our social media page to see core messages of this year’s campaign. When sharing your work online, be sure to engage with us on Twitter (@HandwashingSoap) or Facebook (Global Handwashing Day). Use the hashtag, #GlobalHandwashingDay, to keep up with handwashing conversations around the world!
Join us on Global Handwashing Day: Don’t have time to plan an event? Join ours! This year, the Global Handwashing Partnership will be hosting a spotlight event at this year’s UNC Water and Health Conference. Join us on Tuesday, October 15, from 1:30 – 3:00PM EDT for our annual event titled, “Spotlighting Hand Hygiene: Elevating the little H on Global Handwashing Day and Beyond.” The session can be attended in-person (if you are planning to attend the conference) or online.
