‘H for Handwashing’ was built on the premise that effective behaviour change must start at an early age. We took inspiration from UNICEF’s early childhood development research, which demonstrates that the right support and interventions in the early years of life can significantly boost child development, helping them to grow, learn and thrive.
For generations, children have been taught letters of the alphabet through simple associations such as ‘A’ is for apple, ‘B’ for ball and ‘C’ for cat. In order to make handwashing a part of their everyday lives Lifebuoy’s award-winning H for Handwashing campaign aims to transform the letter H into a symbol for handwashing so that H not only stands for Hat, Horse or Hippo, H stands for Handwashing!
Lifebuoy is a founding partner of the Global Handwashing Partnership. And each year on 15 October, over 200 million people worldwide take part in celebrating GHD across more than 100 countries. In 2020, the launch of our H for Handwashing campaign reached over 11 million school children across the world.
This Global Handwashing Day, Lifebuoy announces its collaboration with children’s behaviour change expert Sesame Workshop and its most loved Muppet Characters -Elmo, Raya, Cookie Monster and Grover. Together Lifebuoy and Sesame Workshop are creating fun, interactive handwashing educational content to teach children from around the world that H is for Handwashing!
Lifebuoy will also launch its first ever children’s book- an “H for Handwashing” alphabet book – in which kids can explore the Alphabet with Azzy (as in A to Z) the horse. Throughout the book, Azzy embarks on an engaging learning journey, discovering the power of soap and water. The book is intended to support school curricula all over the world, whenever and wherever children are taught the ABCs.
