Our Favorite Moments and Activities from 2022

December 21, 2022

As 2022 draws to a close, we want to celebrate another incredible year of partnership to move the needle on hand hygiene. From developing new tools to turning commitment into action, we have made great strides toward our joint vision of universal hand hygiene. In this post, we highlight key activities and our favorite moments from the year.

Key Activity Highlights

Every year, the Global Handwashing Partnership implements activities based on its mission and strategic objectives for advocacy and knowledge management. This year, we added new resources to our repository to support actors when making the case for hand hygiene. We highlight some of these activities below.

  • Annual Hand Hygiene Research Summary – Our latest hand hygiene research summary includes peer-reviewed research published in 2021 and presents key findings and guidance. The summary is reflective of the emerging findings around hand hygiene across various settings. View the full research summary here.
  • Handwashing Station Database – The Global Handwashing Partnership launched a handwashing station database in collaboration with UNICEF in 2022. This database serves as a repository of fit-for-purpose handwashing station designs and aims to be a source of information and inspiration for the promotion and scale up of handwashing globally. Users can use the filters to explore handwashing station products and designs that are context-specific for their needs. View the database here.
  • Hand Hygiene Think Tank – The Hand Hygiene Think Tanks bring together experts from civil society, government, research institutions, and the private sector to drive learning and action for hand hygiene. The 2022 Hand Hygiene Think Tank supported the upcoming WHO/UNICEF global guidelines for hand hygiene in community settings, leveraging a rapid stakeholder mapping process for each context outlined within the new guidelines scope (households, schools, workplaces, public spaces, and religious institutions). A full Think Tank Report will be released in January 2023.
  • Handwashing Handbook – Originally published in 2020, the Handwashing Handbook serves as a comprehensive resource for hand hygiene programming. The Handwashing Handbook is now available in 6 languages, including Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Portuguese, and Spanish. Check out the Handwashing Handbook here.
  • Global Handwashing Day – Of course, we’d be remiss if we didn’t highlight our biggest advocacy activity of the year. The 2022 Global Handwashing Day theme, “United for Universal Hand Hygiene,” emphasizes the need to turn commitment into collective action. Building off the momentum from recent years, Global Handwashing Day 2022 reached over 275 million people through social media alone. A full Global Handwashing Day Report will be available in February 2023.

Apart from key activities, we also want to highlight some of our favorite moments from the year from in-person partner meetups to adding new partners to our extended global network. The past two years have been a transition for many in this field and have put the spotlight on hand hygiene like never before. We are grateful to have reunited with some of our core partners in-person and expand our global network with new partners like LIXIL.

As the year ends, we are reminded of how much progress has been made. The incredible work accomplished in 2022 is also a reminder of how much more needs to be done to meet hand hygiene targets by 2030. The Global Handwashing Partnership will continue our commitment to serve as a prominent global advocate and knowledge hub for hand hygiene.
