A Global Handwashing Day event at the local market in Tema, Greater Accra Region, was organized on 15 October 2015 reached about 1, 300 people by Tema Metropolitan Assembly’s community development unit in partnership with the Church of Christ Rural Water Development Project and Go-Wash Ghana, supported by the Coalition of NGOs in Tema. It was held with the community one market to sensitize the women on the effect of unclean hands and the importance of inculcating the habit of proper handwashing on the theme “Raise a Hand for Hygiene”. The traders were educated on the need to observe intensive handwashing with soap and running water. They were urged to promote the practice as the ambassadors to curb the outbreak of cholera and other diseases. Hand washing stands were mounted at vantage points in the market with volunteers manning them to demonstrate on the proper hand washing procedure. The campaign was carried live on My Dear Radio, a community based radio station which is also streamed online to reach a global audience as part of a community broadcast initiative to reach out to the metropolis with the hand washing message. It brought together several advocacy groups. In attendance were Environmental Health Club, KidWid Foundation, Lamisi Reach Out Foundation and 7A Unique Fashion and Catering Services.
